CROQUET:  Origin of the Word "Bisque"

Allow me to put in the Belgian bid for history, with "bisque" being evidently a typical Brussels mixture between the French "bis" - in this
context meaning "again" of course - and the Flemish diminutive suffix "ke".  To those who would quibble at the misspelling of "ke" as "que", all the Belgians know that French haute cuisine was originally developed here but had to wait for translation into French to acheive wider renown.

I rest my case.
