CROQUET NEWS:  Maui Croquet Club Championship Won by Leo Nikora

Leo Nikora retains the Maui Croquet Club Championship Trophy.

The twelveth annual Maui Croquet Club Championship was won by Leo Nikora of Kihei. It was the tenth time that Leo has won the club championship.

In fourteen days of play on the club's home court at Waipuilani Park, twelve members of the club played every other member in a single round-robin tournament. Advanced Association Rules were followed in two-hour games. Sunshiny CQ-16 balls were used. The tournament was sanctioned by the United States Croquet Association, and directed by Leo Nikora.

Bruno Amby came in second, losing to Leo on net points. Both Bruno and Leo each had ten wins. Bruno completed the only triple peel of the tournament, while Leo completed double and single peels.

Paul Ramm placed third with eight wins. Paul upset Leo in an exciting game, pegging Leo out, and then coming from behind as the clock ran out to win by one.

Kerry Ramm finished fourth, losing to Paul on net points. Both Kerry and Paul each had eight wins.

Denise Reibman played well above her eighth seed, upsetting Paul and John, and scoring 10 against Leo.

Debbie Jefkin-Elnekave and Mickey Norvell were the most improved players, playing well, upsetting higher seeded players, and only getting skunked once.

This was the first tournament played by many of the new members. They performed well, and learned a lot about croquet. A good time was had by all.

The Ramms hosted a marvelous club party at their beautiful home in Maui Meadows.
