The Croquet at Koele tournament was won by Bruno Amby of Lanai City, HI, and he received $1,000. Leo Nikora of Kihei, HI, came in second, receiving $500. Donna Dixon of Houston, TX, won the First Flight, and received $500; while Mary Rodeberg of Merrifield, MN, finished second, receiving $250.
In four days of play on the the two championship courts at The Lodge at Koele, eight players from all over America competed in two flights. Advanced Association Rules were followed, and Sunshiny CQ-16 balls were used.
The tournament was sponsored by The Lodge at Koele, and by Expeditions Ferry; sanctioned by the United States Croquet Association; and directed by Leo Nikora and Alfredo Wheelock.
Championship Flight was a quadruple round-robin with two-hour games. Bruno Amby won nine of twelve games, and scored the tournament's only peel. Leo Nikora had seven wins. Peter Bach of McCall, ID, won four games, including one of Bruno Amby's three loses. Marvin Salles of Palm Springs, CA, had the biggest upset, defeating much higher-ranked Leo Nikora two out of four times.
First Flight was a triple round-robin with two-hour games. Donna Dixon won eight of nine games for a convincing win. Mary Rodeberg won four games, giving Donna Dixon her only loss. Karen Comeau of Rancho Mirage, CA, also won four games, but placed third on net points. Marty Ormsby of Rancho Mirage, CA, had two wins, both against second-place winner Mary Rodeberg.
Patty and Bruno Amby put on a wonderful barbeque at Hulopoe Bay Beach Park. They grilled uhu (parrot fish), kala (unicorn fish), and tako (octopus), all speared by Bruno Amby. It was a magic Hawaiian evening.
